    1. a very simplistic adorable book for toddlers. This was featured in the winter/Christmas section of our library but there's really nothing wintery about it other than the fact that the characters are wearing winter clothes. this book received a little bit of a higher rating from me simply because it sparked conversation between my toddler and me. we discussed what kind of shoes we wear and the kind of cupcakes we liked.

    2. I love Cynthia Rylant's Brownie and Pearl series. In this volume, Brownie and her cat Pearl explore their neighborhood--before stopping for cupcakes and curling up on the couch at home. Biggs' illustrations are simple and appealing; Although the text is very simple and spare, it pairs well with Biggs' appealing illustrations. There is much left unsaid on each of the pages, which readers can talk about together to build storytelling and vocabulary skills. Great for preschoolers, especially girls. [...]

    3. 2.5 - While this is the first Brownie & Pearl book we've read it's easy to see there are others. I'm just not sure if we'll be reading them. This is very, very, very simple. The text couldn't be more simple really. One page: 'The hat shop.'Next page: 'Brownie loves hats.'Next page: 'Pearl does too. What next?'Very simple. The illustrations are fine, nothing special or out of the ordinary. I definitely would have liked there to have been more to the story. Unless it's an older toddler learnin [...]

    4. We've read so many books by Cynthia Rylant and we really enjoy them. Our girls like the Brownie & Pearl stories - they have adorably cute illustrations and a simple narrative that is good for beginning readers. And this one has a nice winter theme - what's better after a long day outside than to curl up in a warm chair with a cat with a cup of hot cocoa?

    5. Cynthia Rylant created a wonderful easy reader in the picture book format. (Recently, the picture books have been reformatted to easy readers as well. Huzzah!) Brownie & Pearl are off to a city to see the sights. They visit shops with hats, shoes, and cupcakes. Quick and easy reading with big illustrated and a large font.2015 Theme: cupcakesAdditional themes: cats, hats, shoes, cityReviewed from a library copy.

    6. Brownie (the little girl) and Pearl (her cat) take a stroll and go shopping. The Brownie & Pearl series in which the odd idiomatic phrases "get dolled up," "go for a spin," "grab a bite," "hit the hay," "make good," "see the sights," "step out," and "take a dip" are illustrated and explored is extremely cute and a hit with toddler girls. However, my husband and I find the lack of parental supervision is somewhat disturbing.

    7. My daughter has all of the Brownie and Pearl books. Although she is almost 10 now and has graduated to reading long novels, she still loves the beautiful pictures and sweet stories of the Brownie and Pearl series. We had many a wonderful story time before bed reading them and they are a treasured collection.

    8. I'm not a fan of an early reader that doesn't use complete sentences. I realize sentence fragments are fairly common in fiction, but they aren't appropriate to teach reading skills.Brownie and Pearl are adorable characters. Pearl's antics add a lot to this simple story. But the story needed a bit more plot, even as an early reader.

    9. A good choice for storytime for pre-readers. I don't think I would purchase this one for an elementary school collection. The attractive illustrations and cute story will make this a popular book for preschool-aged children but it's a bit basic for a school audience. My husband was surprised to find out that Brownie is the girl and Pearl is the cat.

    10. I like Brownie & Pearl, despite critiques that it is basic or too simple. Sometimes simple is all you need! Our duo takes a walk through town, trying on hats and shoes, and when they get tired, they realize that sightseeing is great, but home is better. Sweet little story. Probably best for preschoolers and older toddlers.

    11. We're read this book 20 times, at least. So sweet we love that Pearl does everything that Brownie does, so that we can share the reading on this one. :) Beautiful illustrations, simple, sweet text. I love you, Cynthia Rylant. Thank you for this book.

    12. Topic: Our neighborhoodThis book has cute illustrations because it has many shades of pink. Brownie and Pearl, her cat, visited the hat shop and cupcake shop in their community. It is also easy to read.

    13. I love how the snow is depicted in this book. It isn't a holiday book like I was afraid it would be. Since I really like shoes, I love that Brownie tries on pumps that are too big for her, and Pearl tries on Cowboy boots .ey look good on her paws. Cute!

    14. Sweet, colorful illustrations. It would be nice if downtown areas were still vibrant and full of little shops.

    15. Very sparse text. Cute story about a girl and her dog walking around town, trying things on and eating cupcakes.

    16. Brownie and Pearl are off to see the sights! Join them as they explore their neighborhood. Where will they visit first?

    17. Cute beginning reader about a young girl and her cat seeing the sights in a big city. I like the illustrations of the snowy day (I'm done with snow, but it looks nice in the book).

    18. Delightfully illustrated and with simple text, this title is nice for older toddler/early preschoolers. A girl and her cat enjoy visiting shops in the snowy city.

    19. Simple text and illustrations will make this a good book on community for toddlers & young preschoolers.
