    1. You never really have to go searching too far for a war-themed picture book. There are some truly fantastic ones out there, as well as plenty of mediocre ones, but I often feel that the sheer number of them out there makes it hard for any new ones to impress. I can't say that Ride, Ricardo, Ride will make it to the top of my go-to list for this theme, but it did have some interesting features of note. I particularly enjoyed that the soldiers themselves are never seen, nor even referred to as sol [...]

    2. Phil Cumming's Ride Ricardo Ride is set in Italy in WW 2, when Ricardo's father dismantles his bicycle. Shane Devies' game-like illustrations will appeal to young readers and this story introduces war in a gentle way. The best war story for young readers that I've read since Phil's Anzac Biscuits.

    3. I usually don't add the many picture books I read on - unless it is an exceptional book like this one. Stunning illustrations and a deeply moving story that gave me goosebumps at the end. I regularly notice a particular interest among some of my Primary School students in books about war. This story will help conversations to show what war does to communities, families, individuals, without going into gruesome details.
